Ireland’s Masters of Tradition come to Royce Hall

Free Irish set dancing class kicks off evening performance

ucla-masters-of-tradition LOCAL IRISH music fans wanting to keep the St. Patrick’s Day craic going a little longer will not want to miss the Masters of Tradition performances scheduled for March 30th at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Masters of Tradition is the brainchild of artistic director and fiddler Martin Hayes, who has gathered seven of the best modern exponents of Irish folk music and named their ensemble after the music festival he devised of the same name held each August in the Irish coastal town of Bantry, in County Cork.

This Royce Hall debut will include performances of solos, duets, trios, and full-group collaborations, offering insight into the musical journeys that these performers—and the masterful, iconic music they play—have taken over the years.

Starting off the evening performance is local Irish Set Dancing (Céilí Dance) teacher Caitríona Weafer, in a free, come-one-come-all workshop starting at 5:45 p.m. on the Royce Terrace. Céilí or Set Dancing is Irish Folk Dancing for social enjoyment that is usually structured around facing pairs of lines.

General tickets ($15-$45) are available at cap.ucla.edu, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 310.825.2101 or in person at the UCLA Central Ticket Office located in the southwest corner of the James West Alumni Center.
