emma-watsonEx-Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has been made a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador…and the UN Women’s website crashed due to the interest in the news.
The British star, who completed her degree at Brown University last month said: “Being asked to serve as [a] UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling.
“The chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity that everyone is given and is one I have no intention of taking lightly.
“Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life, that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting.”
She later tweeted: “So excited to start work with the AMAZING people at UN Women!”
Those wondering whether they hand out UN titles to the famous like cookies would be pleased to learn that Watson earned her new humanitarian role by promoting education for girls in Zambia and Bangladesh.
Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said it was an “honour” to have the actress with her on the team.
Meanwhile in movieland, Emma has signed to produce and star in The Queen Of The Tearling, based on a young adult novel by Erika Johansen. It is set in a magical medieval Earth but far in the future.
Harry Potter studio Warner Bros bought the rights to the book, the first of a trilogy, which features 19-year-old princess Kelsea.
She must take the throne of her kingdom, the Tearling, which is besieged by a neighbouring country, Mortmesne, ruled by the Red Queen who has supernatural powers.
Emma said she could not put the book down and joked: “I was desperate to hate it.”
Well done, Emma!
