The Game’s Afoot: Sherlock scoops Emmy nominations

sherlockGETTING NOMINATED for an Emmy has proved elementary for Sherlock, with the hit BBC TV show being shortlisted for the 2014 awards in for both the main stars and the show itself.

The dramatic finale of the third series, Sherlock: His Last Vow has made the shortlist for Outstanding TV Movie. Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of the title role has been recognised in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie category and his co-star, Martin Freeman is included in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie shortlist for his role as Watson.

The nomination is Freeman’s second. The actor is listed alongside Cumberbatch for Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal of Lester Nygaard in the TV adaptation of Fargo.

Two other British actors are named in the same category, with Chiwetel Ejiofor recognized for Dancing on the Edge and Idris Elba for Luther. The trio will compete with Mark Ruffalo and Billy Bob Thornton for the gong.

And the American love affair with Downton Abbey shows no sign of cooling. The period costume drama has done well again this year, nominated for Outstanding Drama against Breaking Bad, Netflix drama House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Mad Men and True Detective. Downton cast members Dame Maggie Smith (the Countess of Grantham), and Joanne Froggart, (Lady’s Maid Anna) have both also been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama. Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, has been nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama.

British actresses Helena Bonham Carter and Minnie Driver have been nominated for Lead Actress in a TV Miniseries or Movie. Bonham Carter for her portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor in Burton and Taylor, and Driver for Return to Zero.

Ricky Gervais also received an Outstanding Actor in a Comedy nomination for his most recent TV effort, Derek, in which he stars as an eternally optimistic caretaker in a nursing home.

The Emmy Award ceremony takes place on Monday, 25 August.
