Meet Jane Owen from Dorset, England who moved to LA 12 years ago to pursue Public Relations
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
I had been to Los Angeles when I was seventeen on a trip around the States before I started University in London. I loved everything about Los Angeles from the weather (obviously) to the Hollywood History that seemed to be on every Palm Tree lined street! I’ve always loved the movie industry and the glitz and glamour of the red carpets and the beautiful movie stars. As a child I had a poster of the Hollywood sign on my bedroom wall.
What one thing do you miss from home?
I miss many things, like the smell of wet grass, proper tea (it’s the water), British comedy, proper sausages…. but none more than my Family.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Dorset?
I lived in a few different places throughout my life including Athens, Greece where I went to the British Embassy School. I also lived in Northumberland in the UK. However I’m going to pick my father’s home in Dorset for this comparison. I would say that the biggest difference between Los Angeles and Dorset, apart from the weather, is the focus of the people, Los Angeles is full of wonderful people but we are all very much driven by our ambitions and our work, people in Dorset for the most part are more focused on having a good walk and keeping the garden.
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
There’s an amazing sushi place on the corner of Olympic and La Cienega called Momo Momo Sushi. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s cheap as chips and its got the freshest, best sushi I’ve ever had. Also, although its not really hidden, but I strongly recommend the Terrace at the Sunset Tower, it has a spectacular view, delicious food and the best Maitre d’ in the world, Dimitri who I am proud to call my friend.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
I would suggest that you take your time to choose where to live. Los Angeles is more like a collection of smaller cities, each with it’s completely distinct personality. Where you live will define a huge part of your experience of living here, there is an area suited for everyone. I strongly recommend, if you can, taking somewhere temporarily and visiting each area before choosing where to settle. In addition I would make an effort to meet people as quickly as possible, the Brits In LA Breakfast at Cecconi’s on Tuesdays for example is a great place to go, because friends will make all the difference to your life in LA, as anywhere I guess, but I believe very much so here.
