Dead British – Dead Brilliant!

Hello Everyone:

Only 46 sleeps till Christmas; which is about seven weekends! But before that there is Thanksgiving – time for us Brits to give thanks for not having to pay taxes back to the UK government on money earned abroad. Poor Americans have to pay taxes to their home country wherever they work. Although now I am a dual citizen I guess that means me too… although I think it is a small price to pay for the quality of life we get to have here.

As you know I was recently back in the UK, and even basic grocery shopping requires a mortgage – we also save a fortune on shoes as due to the lack of walking ours rarely wear out. If you go to London for two weeks all your shoes will need new heels. Another benefit of living in Hollywood is that where else in the world would it be ‘normal’ to dress up as the White Rabbit (my Halloween costume) or Henry VIII (Craig’s) whilst socializing with Ron Jeremy? Our Dead British Halloween party was a great success, so thank you all who celebrated with us and made it such a fun night. Let’s do it again next year?

Doesn’t it feel like a different city now the clocks have gone back? I really embrace the Autumn, as it means a chance to wear jumpers (for an hour before bed!) and adjust my social life accordingly. Fortunately there are some great indoor activities scheduled for the next few weeks including some fantastic theatre productions: David Sedaris’ Santaland Diaries will be opening at The Working Stage in Hollywood (Dec4-21), L.A. Theatreworks is putting on David Hare’s Racing Demon (Nov 13-Nov 16), not to mention Noel Cowards The Vortex (Nov 13 – Dec 14) starring our very own Craig Robert Young! Brits in LA are actually having a group theatre trip to Craig’s play on November 22nd, then a bit of a knees up after at The Village Idiot – so if you fancy a bit of culture please do join us.

We have discount codes for these and lots of other upcoming productions including the Lythgoes’ annual pantomime. Visit our website www.britsin.la for all the details.

If theatre isn’t your thing but you like a good film, I highly recommend you go and see The Theory of Everything, it is the story of Stephen Hawking and opens this weekend – make sure to bring a big box of tissues as it is a bit of a tear-jerker but in a good way, plus we all know what happens, right? I do see a Toscar nomination or two in its future ….

Back to Brits in LA discounts; if you are planning on going back home this Christmas you MUST check out the great deals Air New Zealand are offering us; a round trip economy ticket is discounted by $100! If you have air miles to use up on Virgin or United they can both be used on ANZ flights too (shhh not everyone knows this, so keep it to yourself!) plus the taxes are less as they are not a UK-based company. Another handy Brits in LA discount is being offered by K9’s Only – the dog boarding company. Perfect if you need to leave your pooch behind whilst you go off on your travels. If you are a Brits in LA Key Member you get even deeper discounts. Again visit our website for all the details. You would be silly not to!

I am going to love you and leave you as I have Christmas shopping to do, also known as ‘ write letters to Santa’. Please make sure to check out our Meet a Member column – Gayle is one of my best friends in LA – so I am very excited to be able to feature her. She is quite easy on the eyes too!

As always, feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions or comments at info@britsin.la

Cheers!

Eileen
