Britannias, Battersea and Lear…

Hi Breeps!

This Sunday sees our friends at BAFTA dole out the prestigious awards THE BRITANNIAS on BBC America. Each year BAFTA honor the best of the best. This year is no exception with the likes of Emma Watson, Dame Judy Dench and the usually very shy Mike Leigh. Hollywood stars are also not forgotten with the charismatic Robert Downey Jr. picking up a bronzed statue. Eileen and I were lucky enough to go along to the awards last year held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as guests of presenting sponsor Jaguar where the infamous Sasha Baron Cohen wheelchair incident (gag) took place. So tune in this Sunday to see what shenanigans go down this year….

Thanks to many of you reading this we were able to raise enough money to bring Noel Coward’s The Vortex to LA. We can’t thank you enough. We opened on Thursday to a star-studied reception, including Doris Roberts, Sofia Milos, Maya Fiennes, and producer Amanda Eliasch. The reception was hosted by British pub The Pikey and Scream Famous of Melrose displayed their new British inspired Tee-shirt collection giving 10% of all sales back to the production. Visit our Facebook page to see all the fab photos. To get tickets for our upcoming weekend please visit www.plays411.com and search Noel Coward’s “The Vortex”

During my rehearsals, I did find time to see the fabulous RSC The Globe’s touring version of King Lear at the Broad Theatre in Santa Monica. Originally staged for outside, they keep all the house lights up to bring the outdoor feeling inside. It closes this weekend so check it out if you possibly can, it really is a great production, and you’ll get to see some of Britain’s finest actors at work.  20% discount weekdays for Brits in LA. batterseaEileen was lucky enough this week to get a sneak peek at the Frank Gehry-designed plans for the latest landmark development to hit London’s river Thames – the Battersea Power Station apartments. In attendance were lots of you, as well as our British Consulate General Chris O’ Connor, UKares Foundation’s CEO Fiona Harden and one of our favourite couples, the gorgeous fashion designer Claire Farwell and her uber-talented opera singer partner, Gus…looking spectacular as always. One of the many wonderful aspects of London is its astonishing capacity to reinvent itself through the years and the Battersea Power Station redevelopment is no exception. Expect luxe appointments and the best of everything in these wonderful riverside apartments – at a price. I hear one of the penthouse apartments  could set you back a mere $30 million. Dear Santa…..

This week’s column is a tad shorter than usual…we have a Christmas party to organize for you in aid of one of our favourite charities – Adopt-a-letter. For more details visit www.adoptaletter. org to see how you can help an underprivileged kid this year. Some of the letters are quite heartbreaking.

Finally…Tuesdays are fast becoming BRIT TUESDAYS With breakfast in the morning at Cecconis and our fab Pub Quiz every Tuesday night at the Pikey, it doesn’t feel like we’ve left home at all and now here comes the rain…. finally something for us Brits to moan about!!

Cheers!

Craig
