Dickens in his own words at the Grove Theater

New production of A Christmas Carol uses only the writer’s original words

Play runs November 22 to December 20th.

dickensA NEW PRODUCTION of Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 tale A Christmas Carol opens this weekend at the Grove Theater in Burbank. The show, of which the great British novelist would undoubtedly approve, features only his original words, and is performed by just three performers.

Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Marley’s Ghost, and the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future all make their appearance as the three actors guide us through the story – sometimes as narrators, sometimes as storytellers, and sometimes as characters.

“I wanted to get back to ‘A Christmas Carol’s’  storytelling roots,” says GTC Artistic Director Kevin Cochran who adapted the tale. “To give people a sense of what it must have been like to hear Charles Dickens present the story to an audience as he did many times; yet, also keep the excitement of Scrooge’s interactions with Marley’s Ghost and the Christmas Spirits.

The production runs thru December 20 at the Grove Theater, located at 1111-b West Olive in Burbank. Performances are on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets are $34.50 general; $29.50 Burbank residents; $24.50 for seniors and students.  No show on November 28; one additional performance on December 18. Pay-what-you-can performances are on November 29 and 30.

The cast includes Jenna Augen, winner of the 2014 UK Theatre Award for Supporting Performance; Broadway veteran David Allen Jones; and Frank Simons; all appearing  courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association.
