David Tennant may be best known as a certain Time Lord hero but his next role couldn’t be further away. The Scottish star is coming to the Marvel universe.

WHO BETTER? David Tennant
WHO BETTER? David Tennant

The studio giant has cast Tennant as the major villain in its upcoming Netflix original series A.K.A. Jessica Jones.

The Doctor Who and Broadchurch star will play Zebediah Killgrave (also known as The Purple Man).

“The Purple Man” has the power to completely control people, making them do whatever he says. Robbing banks is a cinch: the tellers will simply hand over the money. Telling everyone in a fast food restaurant to beat each other to death? That’s more Purple Man’s style.

The official series description: “After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter, ABC’s Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23) is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City. An enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past, Kilgrave’s reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world.”

In the comics, Kilgrave can produce pheromones which give him the power to control people’s minds as long as he’s physically nearby.

He also can recover from severe injuries very quickly and is, quite literally, purple. But it’s not clear yet how closely Marvel’s series will stick to the comic version of the character.

“I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character,” said the show’s Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

This isn’t the first time a Doctor Who star has caused trouble in the Marvel-verse. Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston was an evil elf in Thor: The Dark World.

“A.K.A. Jessica Jones” is set to debut in late 2015 on Netflix… I’m loving my Netflix originals!
