Welcome to the Rollercoaster….

Hello Everyone!

If the first 6 weeks of 2015 are anything to go by it is going to be a very slow and arduous year; it seems everyone I have spoken to has been on a rollercoaster ride of some sort or another. A bit of a contradiction but that is certainly reflective of my year so far! I just read my horoscope courtesy of resident astrologer Anne Shaw and it looks like things are going to be on the up…phew!

I do actually have some fantastic news to share. As you know we have been helping raise money for Brits in LA member Amy Watts – the target was £100,000 to cover the costs of operations to help Amy fight her battle with Stage Four colon cancer; and thanks to her amazing friends and family, as well as lots of you, the full amount was raised in just 15 days!! Obviously, the money is just the first hurdle and there is still a way to go, but will certainly be one less thing to worry about – make sure to visit the website HoldAmysHand.com to keep up to date on Amy’s progress – special thanks to Barbara Windsor aka Peggy Mitchell, whose generous donation was the push needed to reach the goal!

According to a Time Out Global Dating Survey (just in time for Valentine’s Day), the British accent has been voted the most attractive in the world. The British magazine polled over 11,000 people worldwide and us Brits (with 27% of the vote) beat out the Americans with the Irish coming third. The Aussies came in fourth and the French – who are supposed to speak the language of love – were left languishing in fifth.

C’est la vie!

Love is in the air – a tip for the new arrivals amongst you; be warned that you may receive Valentine’s cards from people who have no romantic interest in you whatsoever! Don’t get too excited (or depressed), as here it is definitely more of a Hallmark celebration. My friends’ kids send a card to everyone in their class including their teachers!

There are so many great shows, plays and concerts coming up – I am particularly excited for the Turner exhibition at the Getty (opens February 23rd) – I recently watched the film Mr Turner (starring Timothy Spall) and learnt that he had ‘bequeathed much of his art to the British nation’, sadly his request wasn’t completely fulfilled, although the fact that the Tate have brought some of his work for us to see at the Getty, at no charge to the public, means that they are at least trying!

Dame Edna is in town and as bold and brazen as ever! I always enjoyed her as a child but I love her even more after seeing the live show. Her witty banter with the audience members and extremely topical remarks remain as shocking as ever. She barely stops to take a breath throughout the evening, and at one point even appears to channel a Ziegfeld Follies girl during a costume change on stage behind some giant ostrich feathers! It is so off the cuff I suspect you could see it every night and not get the same show – I am certainly tempted to go again!

ONE OF A KIND: Eileen catches Dame Edna at the Ahmanson…

“Dame Edna’s Glorious Goodbye: The Farewell Tour” runs through until March 15th at the Ahmanson Theatre  at the Music Center downtown. Ouor favorite charity UKares organized a group trip this week and 50% of the ticket price went directly to the charity; it’s always good to give especially if you get a laugh or two thrown in too – maybe they should do something for Comic Relief in March….

Lots of other great stuff was added to our site this week – including information on how to vote back in the UK (or visit gov.uk/register-to-vote) – also a concert ticket giveaway to see Kindness courtesy of Goldenvoice. Visit us at www.Britsin.LA  for all the details.

And for a good time and a bit of brain exercise, join us at the Pikey on Sunset Boulevard on Feb. 24th for the return of our much-loved pub quiz.

If you have any questions feel free to drop us a line at britsinla@gmail.com

Cheers!
