Meet a Member: Esmay and Max Luck

Meet Esmay and Max Luck from London who moved to LA a year ago to pursue music.

Was there a particular reason you chose LA?

the-luckWe had met so many people over the last few years who had either seen us perform or heard our music and subsequently told us, “you guys should go to California, they’d love you!” So we made it our goal to at least get here and see what we could achieve. A few doors opened – we won an international songwriting competition in Nashville for one of our songs, managed to secure US working visas, and then met someone who was willing to offer us a starting base – a place to stay here in California. We had a few friends over in Los Angeles and it struck us as somewhat of a ‘no brainer’.

What do you miss most from home?

Well, London is our home; we have family and friends and so many memories growing up, spending time in different areas of London. We miss them all – just being able to wander the streets, crossing from one area to another. There’s a lot of history and beautiful buildings there, and it’s great how you can wake up, walk over to Camden market, into Primrose Hill, look out over the skyline towards St Paul’s, head into a pub, get lunch and then jump on a bus or a tube and be right in the middle of Regent Street in half an hour.

What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? If so, why?

LA is always on, wild, hot sun shining through blue skies onto hot pavements and asphalt roads, populated by some of the world’s most beautiful people and a ton of cars. It can be glitzy and glamorous in parts, and tough in others, but almost everyone is here for one reason – to make it.

What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus London?

The ‘can-do’ attitude of the people, the mindset. That’s why we are here. “You want to get something done? Sure, let’s go do it right now…”

Do you have any hidden gems in LA that you want to share with us?

‘Bar Ama’ in downtown is amazing for Mexican food, ‘Beaming’ does great healthy food and shakes when you feel like you can’t eat another ‘Plan Check’ burger – which are awesome. ‘Cecconis’ is a must at happy hour for some of the best Italian food and drink in California and probably best Negronis on the planet.

A lot of people have misconceptions about LA – did you?

No, it’s all true. Jk. Not really ‘misconceptions’, but it is true there is a struggle here, and people are all pushing to be seen, heard and discovered.

What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?

Try and make some connections before you come, just so you can find your way a little when you arrive. We read Lara Clear’s post and absolutely agreed on the car. You need a car like you would need a smartphone – which you should also have, especially for trying to find the quickest way to your show or casting.

If your life was a TV show what would be the theme tune and why?

Knight rider. He speaks to his car. Kit was the old school Siri. And this is LA.
