Meet Adam Linzey from Oxford who moved to LA 2 years ago to pursue his masters degree as USC School of Cinematic Arts
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
I always wanted to live in LA growing up, but it wasn’t until I was accepted to USC’s prestigious film school that I was able to move here. It all happened rather quickly and by surprise actually. Studying here is allowing me to pursue making the films I’ve always dreamed of making. I’m currently in preproduction on my thesis film, which is shooting next month.
What do you miss most from home?
Obviously family and friends, its always hard to make the timezones work for Skype calls, but the small things I miss are proper pubs and Maltesers.
What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? If so why?
I’ve always thought of LA as being beautiful in it’s ugliness. The architecture is often uninspired but it has this gritty urbanity that I find really attractive. The more I explore the city the more I find things to love about it. Does that make sense?
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Oxford?
Driving! Growing up in Oxford I never had to drive and for my first couple of years here I didn’t have car! So LA has been the city I’ve had to learn to drive in – as scary as that sounds.
Do you have any hidden gems in LA that you want to share with us?
I don’t know if this is hidden, because it’s a huge thing in New York, but the Banana Pudding at Magnolia Bakery (West 3rd and Orlando) is the best dessert I’ve ever had.
A lot of people have misconceptions about LA – did you?
I suppose I was expecting the city to be more open – like a lot of Americans I know – but because the city is so sprawling and we spend so much time in cars it’s not as personal as you might imagine.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
Learn to drive, get a car and then explore!
Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
The best advice I’ve had here came from a British Professor who said: “There are few really big decisions, if you come to a fork in the road, just think about which way you want to go and keep walking.”
