I am SO excited for veteran actress Charlotte Rampling, who has picked up a surprise “Best Actress” nomination for her role in the low budget, British-made relationship drama ‘45 Years’.

Many of this season’s critical darlings earned Academy Award nominations Thursday morning. But the Oscars always manage to throw in a few surprises – and this year was no different thanks to this surprise nomination.

Although the 69-year-old star has been earning critical raves for decades, this is her first Oscar “nom” for her portrayal of Kate Mercer, a conflicted wife who is planning a party to celebrate her 45th wedding anniversary.

A week before the celebration, a letter arrives for her husband, played by Sir Tom Courtenay, revealing the body of his first love has been discovered, frozen in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. Her perspective on the relationship changes as the party nears and the drama unfolds.

Oo-er!

Rampling has received eight awards for her role in the film, so far, including best actress by America’s National Society of Film Critics and won best actress at the Berlin Film Festival and the Edinburgh Film Festival for the part.

The Broadchurch actress recently told ITV News the film represents the “top of the mountain” for her career.

She said: “For an actor who has played so many genres, so many types of films, working away and working away, and then you have a feeling that all this has come together in one moment, in one film, which has happened in 45 years.

All the bits and pieces have come together of you as a person and you as an actor and people are saying ‘hey this is something’. That’s amazing.”

Despite widespread hopes though, the film itself sadly did not receive any nominations.

Rampling will compete against Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Jennifer Lawrence for Joy.

Good luck Charlotte… and roll on February 28, 2016, I can’t wait!
