Groups, subgroups, prime groups: finding your tribe in an election year

Hey Britlings!

Are you over this election yet? Feeling the Bern or Berned out? Hots

for Hills, or Trumping the Trump? Oh boy! I, for one cannot wait for it all to be over, so someone can run his huge country.

FEELING THE ERN: this week’s Pub Quiz winners

To be quite frank, I’m actually over all of this ‘America decides phenomenon’. From American idol, The Voice, to this political race… I don’t ever remember the UK being this bad, (and I’ve been out of it for a while), but there definitely seems to be an obsession here in the USA. A sort of tribal calling. Facebook groups popping up like Bernie Bros and Bros4hillary, to crusing4cruz and the Trump Rioters, it seems like everyone is trying to find their tribe while at the same time trying to assimilate. So much for not putting people in boxes! It sometimes seems like social media is encouraging us to divide, rather than unite. Or perhaps social media is just giving us information overload.

And don’t get me started on the lies – either little white ones or flaming big whoppers – that the candidates spout. Listen, I’m all for you supporting your candidate of choice, but a little fact checking will go a long way, I know I’ve been guilty in the past of enthusiastically posting, only to be called out by a ‘friend’ that it’s fabricated (reaches swiftly for the delete button). Snopes has become my best friend now for fact-checking articles, images, etc… But lately my Facebook feed looks like the ticker over ASnderson Cooper’s face on CNN.

We’ve all become experts on politics…or so we like to think. How I miss the more simpler times when social media was all about checking in to glamorous locations, posting food porn pics and describing your relationship status as ‘it’s complicated’. The best advice I’ve ever given was never read the comments. I truly don’t know how these celebrities do it today.

And then there’s my email in-box. No matter how often I try to clean in out it’s always full of come-ons from folks I’ve never meet, adverts for Mexican Viagra or penis enlargement emails. All this causes me great anxiety that I’m never going to catch up. Arrrghhhh! Am I’m alone in this or do you feel it too?

Anyway I’m looking to you to help me step away from technology and I would love your advice. Shoot me an email at craig@britsin.la or send me a tweet at @craigryoung (is that ironic, or what?)

Anyway I noticed that in LA we have a lot of subgroups or neighborhoods and it got me to thinking of starting a petition to have an area named Little Britain. After all, if you can have a Little Bangladesh, why not a Little Britain? Would you be up for it and if so where do you think it

should be? Join our Facebook conversation and let us know.

Congrats to pub quiz winners this week…we had a huge turnout at the Pikey on Sunset and

huge thanks to Centre Theatre Group for the raffle prizes to see ‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”. I was lucky enough to see this last week and it was brilliant.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you at one of our events very soon.

Cheers!

Craig
