Tuning out the politics…

Divide and conquer appears to be the main strategy of politicians across the world.

There is certainly a lot of dividing going on, that’s for sure! The theory behind the expression is that the powers that be encourage us minions to turn upon each other, creating a distraction so we don’t realize they are actually in cahoots. This has been particularly apparent during the current presidential race and has reared its sneaky head in the EU Referendum debate too – I don’t believe I have ever witnessed such animosity from a group of people who are supposedly on the same side.

BEST OF ENEMIES: The Clintons at Trump's last wedding
BEST OF ENEMIES: The Clintons at Trump’s last wedding

The diatribes written on social media honestly astound me, there is definitely more than the usual amount of mudslinging going on; although no party has topped the Federalists, who claimed during a campaign in 1800 that their Republican opponent Thomas Jefferson was dead! There is one story (that I hope is true) that Donald Trump has hatched a secret plan with the Clintons (who notably attended his last wedding in 2005) to sabotage the Republican’s chances of winning the Presidential election this year. So perhaps spouting those ridiculous policies and causing an international uproar is all an act.  It may seem a bit farfetched, but one can hope! To add more fuel to the fire I then discovered that Mr Trump had only registered as a Republican in 2009, conveniently coinciding with Clinton losing the Democrat nomination to Obama in 2008. So when I added  two plus two together I got a googol! I am not sure if Clinton is the best choice to run our country either but I certainly prefer her over Mr Drumpf. Possibly he does too…

I honestly don’t know what to think any more, except sadly as I get older it seems more obvious to me that leaders of the Western World rarely make a huge difference no matter how hard they try. (This obviously excludes Blair and Bush – the jury is still out on that one. But hopefully the long-awaited and well overdue Chilcott Report will give an honest account upon its publication on July 6th.) Nine times out of ten the incumbent party is disadvantaged by an opposing majority therefore they rarely get any of their decent ideas passed, and definitely not without compromising them. I recall being so excited about Obamacare not realizing that the great tag line “No one will be denied healthcare” came with an addendum of “but we can charge you what we like for it and you will get fined if you refuse to pay our non-negotiable charge”.

Craig does Bob: pub quiz is set for Tuesday
Craig does Bob: pub quiz is set for Tuesday

One policy I do quite admire is the import tariffs recently imposed on Chinese Steel – it is a shame Britain didn’t implement that one before the Tata debacle in Wales – or perhaps the Asian-owned company have subscribed to the recurring trend of dividing and conquering….But whatever your political persuasion is, please don’t waste your vote. Red, Blue, Green, Brexit, Remain, your opinion is a very important one. If you are undecided do some homework! As one of my favorite designers Diane von Furstenburg once said “I have always believed that when you have a voice, you have an obligation to use that voice to empower others”.
