Who Runs The world? Girls Do! (and Pokemon Go)

They mean business: Theresa May (left) and Angela Eagle

Firstly congratulations to Britain’s new Prime Minister, Theresa May, who took over from David Cameron in No. 10 on Wednesday. She seems hell-bent on uniting the country after the “Brexit” vote and the political apocalypse left in its wake.  She seems like a no-nonsense type. Humor doesn’t seem like her strong suit and I’m sure we won’t see her on SNL anytime soon, but Britain isn’t looking for the next judge on BGT (Britain’s Got Talent) they are looking for a strong leader. And she seems to have the experience and the chops, her voting history on human rights, gay rights, working rights and privacy rights certainly leaves a lot to be desired, but I do feel Britain is need of a woman’s touch right now, so I wish her the best of luck, not an easy task cleaning up the mess that was left behind.

May certainly seems to have no immediate strong competition from the chaotic Labour party, as Jeremy Corbyn is currently being strong-armed by many members to step down from the top job and now has a sturdy opponent in Angela Eagle. who has declared herself “Not a Blairite, Not a Brownrite, and not a Corbynista – I am my own woman” at a press conference this week.

So, there will be entertaining times ahead and it will be very interesting to see this play out. Those who know me well, know I’m very much a feminist and a big supporter of Hillary Clinton, so personally I’m hoping for BRITS IN LA to have two strong women in power for a change.

SWEETIE BOX OFFICE

Speaking of powerful women, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley’s first Absolutely Fabulous movie stormed the UK box office last week and Brits in LA Key Members get to see a complimentary advanced screening later this week. Check our website for details.

And then there’s the Spice Girls, who celebrated 20 years since Wannabe was released this week by releasing a female empowering re-enactment of the iconic one-shot video to help promote equal pay, end violence and bring gender equality. Rumours are rife that the girls will we reforming for a tour next year celebrating 21 years. Good on yer girls!

pokemon-goOh Lordy! The latest craze to sweep the UK and the world is the app Pokémon Go! Think Tamagotchi (the dinosaur digital keyring from the 90’s that you had to feed every hour or so, or it would die) meets fitbit!  It comes with no instructions, you have to sort of figure it out, but basically it syncs with your GPS and forces you to walk, cycle, skateboard to capture characters from the game and check-in to certain places along the way to power up!

The New York Times describes it as “a free smartphone game that has soared to the top of the download charts: It has sent people into streets and parks, onto beaches and even out to sea in a kayak in the week since it was released. The game – in which players try to capture exotic monsters from Pokémon, the Japanese cartoon franchise – uses a combination of ordinary technologies built into smartphones, including location tracking and cameras, to encourage people to visit public landmarks, seeking virtual loot and collectibles. Even Uber is getting in on the game, offering Pokémon chasers rides to keep players safe.

That’s all we’ve got time for. Sending you lots of love from the raining motherland.

Feel free to email us at britsinla@gmail.com with any questions or comments as we always love to hear from you.

Cheers!
