Britain’s Future: Consul General weighs on implications of Brexit vote

The Brexit decision in the June 23rd referendum shocked many in the UK, as well as in the rest of Europe and throughout the world. Prime Minister David Cameron stepped down to be replaced by Theresa May, the first female British Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher, and now she must navigate a political challenge that has not been seen in the history of the EU. Amidst fears of economic damage, growing animosity to immigrants and a split running through British society, how will May and her new Cabinet react? What are the potential scenarios for Britain’s future relations with the rest of Europe?

On Thursday, August 25th British Consul General Chris O’Connor will speak to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council at the Intercontinental, 2151 Avenue of the Stars in Century City, addressing the challenges May faces as she negotiates leaving the EU and the potential global impact of those deals.

Chris O’Connor has been the British Consul General in Los Angeles since August 2013. He is the senior representative of the UK government in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Hawaii. Prior to his current role, O’Connor was British Ambassador to Tunisia from 2008-2013. He has also served as a British diplomat in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Canada, and at the headquarters of NATO. He was head of the UK Foreign Office Middle East Peace Process Team in London from 2003-2005. O’Connor speaks Spanish, French and Arabic.
