Let’s get it Kickstarted!

Let’s face it, Kickstarter campaigns can be a real pain in the rear end, right?

I know I’m guilty of sighing each time a new update comes in. But so many of my friends are raising money to fund their dream-come-true projects these days, that I actually think it’s kind of wonderful. Some people have really gone on to do wonderful things, like Brits in LA member Jake Thornton, who used Kickstarter to raise funds for a short film called “Blood Soldiers.” He has now gone on to sell some major Hollywood scripts and as just bought his first home for his family. Gayle Day has funded a few albums. Many are funding plays and ideas. I just funded a new comfortable way to travel – a neck brace, that fits over the airline seat and cradles the face…genius!

Anyway, think of a Kickstarter fund as not only a good way of supporting your friends, but supporting the arts and helping people who can’t use traditional ways of getting noticed or cannot sneak in through the tiny openings of those very-tight Hollywood gates.

Which leads me nicely to introduce our latest artistic venture: @asst (AKA The Assistants). A comedy show about the lives of six friends who also work as celebrity assistants, with many trials and tribulations, they navigate their way through the lives of the rich and famous while trying to live their own lives too. We have a target of $10,000, which will make sure our cast and crew get paid and funds the equipment rental, locations and insurance. We realize that the traditional way of fundraising can get lost in the saturated market, so decided we would actually give free content every other day to thank our backers and supporters, which you can view by visiting our Kickstarter page, HERE.

You may recognized Brits in LA member Jeffrey Postlethwaite (from Peaky Blinders) – and me – as his boss. We’ve had SO much fun making these short films for you, which is just a tiny taster of what’s yet to come. So any pledge you can make will not go unnoticed as we have some fun perks for you too. I hope you will support us and the art!

If music be the food of love…

We are very blessed that the city which we now call home is one of the world’s great music cites, and this summer we’ve been spoiled for choice, with SO MANY great British acts playing recently.

Top of my list is probably Adele at the Staples Center. She sounded amazing, however she had to cancel a show in Arizona a few days later due to a cold (she actually posted a video on social media, sans makeup and glam gown, apologizing to her fans, which I thought showed great honesty and humility.) I’m glad she is better now. Boney M were alsofantastic and invoked real nostalgia in me, as I remember being five on a holiday in Margate, being paid to STOP singing the only song I knew… “Brown Girl in The Ring -Tra-la-la-la-la”. Other Brit acts coming this week include Chesney Hawkes, Angela McCluskey, and Culture Club.

In other news…

In the meantime you can always come and say hello at our weekly British Breakfast, Tuesdays at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood (corner of Robertson and Melrose) – stop by any time between 9.30-11.30am.

Cheers!
