Are You Prepared?

bila-angela-mccluskeySeptember is National Preparedness Month! The downside to living in our lovely Golden State is that we are more likely to get hit with a natural disaster – whether it’s a big earthquake, winter floods or the fires and drought have been ever present for many a month now. The looming ‘Big One’ means that taking a bit of time out to prepare now, may be a lifesaver down the road.

The Red Cross have a useful list of things you should have on hand for the ‘just in case’ – Water being at the top of the list. As our supply could be affected long after the aftershocks have stopped.

For details visit tinyurl.com/RedCrossPrepared  for a comprehensive list plus an option to order an emergency pack.  I have water purifying tablets and a water filter on hand too but maybe I am over thinking! One very important thing to do is to designate an out of state contact for you and your family/flatmates to check in with. As if the power fails it will be far easier to report to someone not directly affected. Also consider having a chat to make a plan with your neighbors – especially if they are elderly or have small children. The first time I thought about getting supplies together I felt a little bit silly as it all seemed rather extreme; but I realized I would feel more stupid if the day arrived and I was not ready – or even worse, reliant on others all because I couldn’t get my act together.  As the mantra goes: Don’t Delay – Get A Kit – Make A Plan – Stay Informed.

I went along to the LA Galaxy Night of Nations last weekend – we teamed up with the British Consulate to represent Great Britain! It was a really fun night and it made me think we should organize another Brits go to the Galaxy trip soon – especially now that Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard are both team members.

We have two more great competitions for you this week – up for grabs are two pairs of tickets for Bloc Party at the Hollywood Bowl on September 25th – plus entrance to a roller disco before the show! Then we also have tickets and VIP after party passes for one of my all-time favorite singers, Scottish songstress Angela McCluskey. She is at the Troubadour on September 30th, where she will be reuniting with the Wild Colonials – email us at BritsinLA@gmail.com to put your name in the hat. Winners will be drawn at random at noon on Monday September 19th.

You have until next Tuesday to get prepared for our Pub Quiz at the Pikey – Craig Young will be hosting this one, so make sure to follow him on Twitter  @CraigRYoung as I am sure he will be throwing out a few hints on the rounds he has in store for you. Not all questions are British and get there at 7.45pm if you need a team to join.

Make sure to follow us on Twitter @BritsinLA if you want to keep up to date with all our news and events.

Cheers!
