Our very wet winter…but we’re still not out of the woods!

It is hard to believe that after all the rainfall we’ve had that California is still in a severe drought.

But according to the United States Drought Monitor’s last report on January 24th (droughtmonitor.unl.edu) we still have a way to go before we make up the deficit. There are many effortless ways to conserve water; I have now made it a habit to not have the tap running whilst I brush my teeth, and when rinsing dishes I make sure to do them over a bucket which can then be used to water the plants. The easiest one of all is to make sure your sprinklers are turned off. This usually requires no more effort than a flick of a switch, and with the downpours we have had recently it will probably be a couple of weeks before you need to put them on again – unless it rains again in the meantime!  It is astounding how many systems are left on, I have even spotted some going when it is actually raining. It looks like we may get another downpour over the weekend so turn them off today!

The chilly weather has given me the perfect opportunity to get out my M&S  thermals – I stockpiled them on a recent trip home and was feeling rather foolish until this recent cold snap. I knew they would come in handy eventually! Marks and Spender now deliver to the USA and even offer free express delivery for orders over $50! Visit marksandspencerlondon.com/us to get your long johns…or anything else that grabs your fancy.

We have some great events and giveaways coming up over the next few weeks. You can always find out what is on offer either by visiting our Facebook page @BritsinLA or via this link www.Britsin.LA – this weekend some of our members are off to see a very special screening of Swan Lake performed by the Bolshoi Ballet – the latest from their ‘live from Moscow’ series – if this sounds right up your street, you can still purchase tickets for the event on Sunday February 5th – it will be aired around the globe , so

Visit bolshoiballetincinema.com to see if it is at a cinema near you.

I did save a ticket giveaway so that those of you who follow us via the British Weekly can participate too. Goldenvoice have given us a pair of tickets for the White Lies show at El Rey (February 15th) – this show is already sold out, so if you are a ticketless fan, email us at info@britsin.la to enter. Preparations for the 10th Annual Toscars are in full swing. Teams were selected last week and now they are all frantically trying to write, film and score the Toscar-winning movie. The awards ceremony will be held on February 22nd, visit TheToscars.com if you would like to join us and the hopeful Toscar nominees for a fun-packed evening full of glamour and laughter.

We are truly grateful to returning sponsor Beltran Brito Immigration Law Firm, for their continued support of the Toscars and Brits in LA – if you need immigration advice visit beltranbrito.com to book a free consultation.

Our weekly Breakfast Club has been very busy recently. I think the main attraction is our lovely Mayor of Breakfast, Bernard Skibben. He always goes out of his way to make sure everyone is welcomed and finds a seat and a friendly face – we are really lucky to have him. Although the food is extremely tasty too. Eggs Benedict seem to be neck-and-neck with the Full English in the popularity stakes. You can find us any Tuesday from 9.30am-11.30am at Cecconis in West Hollywood – please note they do stop serving the breakfast menu at 11!

Hope to see some of you soon and keep an eye on our Twitter @BritsinLA for future competitions. And don’t forget to turn those sprinklers off!

Cheers!

Eileen
