BiLA: a great way to make friends you haven’t met yet…

One of the things I love about Brits in LA is the friendships that I have made. Over the past 10 years through our group I’ve met some amazing people from all walks of life. I often think if it wasn’t for Brits in LA that I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of meeting such a heterogeneous mixture. It really is ironic, as many of the people that immediately come to mind hail from Ireland, Sweden, Hungary, and of course America.

Our group was officially started when an old friend (the lovely Mel Brown) introduced me to Craig. I actually found her through a search online on ‘Friends Reunited’. It turned out she was a very successful publicist and by chance was going to be working in Los Angeles the following month. She arrived a few days before Halloween and I invited her to a party. She asked if she could bring a friend. I, of course said yes and that was the start of my beautiful partnership with Mr. Young! In spite of living in the UK Mel has been a very active member and supported us whenever she can. Last year Craig and I were in London at the same time and used the opportunity to catch up with Mel over dinner. Again she said ‘can I bring a friend’ – this time it was a client of hers, a very funny American comedian called Lucie Pohl, who was on her way to the Edinburgh festival. Serendipity stepped in again as we immediately became fast friends and as a result a few months later this led to us persuading her to host this years’ annual Toscars! You may know Lucie (pictured, left) from ‘Red Dwarf’ or ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ or the gamers amongst you will recognize her voice from Overwatch.

It just goes to show when someone asks ‘ Can I bring a friend’ that you should probably say yes, as you never know who is on the other end of that question.

There are still a few tickets left for the 11th Annual Toscars on Wednesday, February 28th – $100 gets you an open bar, food from Batterfish as well as a seat at our red carpet affair – we have a plethora of celebrity presenters lined up too. We also have our very first Lifetime Achievement award; which goes to Kerry Marlowe (née Finlayson). Visit TheToscars.com for full details or email us at info@britsin.la

Some of you may remember that Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama was a judge for the Toscars a few years ago? Well now she is back in LA with her old bandmates! They are performing a show at The Novo in DTLA on February 20th and we have a pair of tickets to give away! Email us at info@britsin.la to put your name in the hat. Winner will be drawn at random on Monday at 10am. Funnily enough, I actually met Siobhan through Brits in LA too.

Hope you all ate lots of pancakes on Tuesday? Let us know what (if anything) you are giving up for lent. I saw that fellow member Katie Ames is giving up social media. Now there’s an idea….

Cheers!
