It’s True: Beliefs Do Control Your Destiny!

In this week’s blog, we are going to look at something that influences our daily decisions in every moment – our CORE BELIEFS.

Take the recently departed Sir Roger Bannister. He believed he could run a mile in under four minutes, despite it being widely considered impossible. Bannister made history in 1954 by doing just that – changing the beliefs of the world’s best milers in the process.

But we should be aware that nobody is born with beliefs. They are something we learn as we age. During our childhood (roughly from 7-14 years old), many of our beliefs about how life should be are formed and they are usually learnt behaviors from our parents. Here are some typical examples I’m sure you’ve heard: “Money does not grow on trees”….“Children should be seen and not heard”…..“You are too young to do that”…..”Eat all that food on the plate – there are kids starving in Africa and you will offend me if you don’t”….”Drinking lots of milk builds strong bones”.

In some cases these beliefs may be true – but as we reach adulthood it’s always healthy to check in on our beliefs and ask ourselves – are they really true? Following are five areas of life where your beliefs about what is possible and what is not can really shape your life enormously.

HEALTH: What do you believe about your health? Do you think you will never be able to lose that muffin top, that hip fat or reduce your alcohol intake?

BUSINESS: Do you believe you can only make a certain amount of money and that competition is too much to handle in your business sector?

RELATIONSHIPS: Do you believe a healthy relationship is impossible or believe it’s impossible because you have been in too many bad romances?

FAMILY: Do you believe family time is important and a priority?

LOVE: Do you show yourself love and everyone around you?

These five areas are perhaps the most consequential when it comes to “Limiting Beliefs” those restraints you put on yourself at an unconscious level which stop you from making progress in your life! But real enlightenment allows us to put aside beliefs such as “I will never be able to make enough money to have a great life”, or “I will never be healthy and have the body I deserve because I was born like this” or “I don’t deserve the best in life because I am not good enough”. Learn to identify that inner voice. Don’t judge yourself harshly, just name and identify that limiting belief and soon you’ll be able to move beyond it….to gain the success you truly deserve in life.
