Amid all the chaos, we welcome continuity….

The (Dis)United Kingdom seems to be in a right two and eight at the moment.

The powers that be are still faffing around with EU negotiations and have now even managed to mess up the lives of people who emigrated to the UK 50 years ago. The Windrush generation are innocent victims caught up in the current Brexit crossfire. They were invited to Britain after World War II to help rebuild the country. They travelled from the West Indies on a ship called the Empire Windrush, which then became a symbol of British Caribbean history. They were given citizenship but somehow the Home Office ‘mislaid’ the records. This only came to light because the government recently required the NHS and employers to do the job of Border Patrol and check everyone’s papers. It’s not something you expect to get asked when you’ve been living and working in a country for 50+ years. It’s all such a disgrace, it makes the 1980s TV show ‘Yes, Minister’ look like a documentary….although the USA isn’t doing a much better either…

Thank goodness for babies being born. I know some of you aren’t fans of the Royal family but at least, for the most part, they can be a pleasant distraction.

Some of you may be interested to know that Princess Charlotte (the daughter of Kate & William) also made history on the day of the birth. As for the first time in 900 years, the newborn prince will not jump ahead of his elder sister in the line of succession. This is due to a change in the law back in 2013. The amendment only impacts those born after 2011, so it won’t affect Princess Anne, even though she is older than Andrew and Edward.

Royal celebrations are a great excuse for the community to get together for a knees up. I’m really looking forward to our Wedding Viewing party at The Cat & Fiddle. I’m not so fussed about the actual marriage but do enjoy us all coming together. It’s especially nice when we are synchronized with our family and friends back in Britain, it really does make them feel slightly less far away. The party will go on all night (nuptials are at 3am, the early hours of May 19th), pajamas are welcomed but not required. Tickets are available to purchase through The Cat & Fiddle Pub via Eventbrite. You can find full details either or on our Facebook page or at www.britsin.la

A massive thank to our event sponsors, immigration firm Beltran Brito Casamayor LLP and also Air New Zealand who will be also giving away a pair of Roundtrip tickets to London on the night!

If you have any questions or comments you can drop us a line at info@britsin.la

Have a great week.

Cheers!
