“Ruthless” Cumberbatch lets slip Star Trek spoilers…

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has described his Star Trek: Into Darkness character as a “ruthless” yet “complicated” villain.

Until now, the 36-year-old British actor has kept the identity of the mysterious villain under wraps.

Playing nemesis to Captain Kirk (played by Chris Pine), again under the direction of ‘Lost’ creator JJ Abrams, Cumberbatch explains it is not as simple as “good” versus “evil,” but has revealed his evil alter ego would be very difficult to judge because of his ambiguous nature.

He said: “He is very ruthless. He is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the actions he takes have intent and reason.

Cumberbatch says he was attracted to the character for its ‘complexity’ rather than being strictly black and white saying: ”He is a complicated character not to be judged by white-or-black, or good-or-evil.

“But this is the appeal of J.J.’s works and I felt challenged as an actor.”

The War Horse star also praised Abrams’ 2009 reboot, but is wary of the franchise’s popularity and said he was overcome with “terror” when he realised how many people would be watching the next installment.

The star, who has become an unlikely heart-throb with his own reboot of Sherlock Holmes on the telly,  explained: “I was a fan of the [first film], so I was pleased when I got the offer. But I know the second one will become far-bigger scale, so I felt terror instantly.”

The first trailer for Star Trek: Into Darkness was released earlier this week and the hits cinemas on May 17, 2013.

Trust this intrepid Brit to boldly go where no villain has gone before…!
