British actor Tom Hardy is set to play Sir Elton John in a film about the legendary singer’s life.
Rocketman, a musical biopic about the Candle In The Wind superstar will feature Hardy in the lead role, in a stark departure from his role as super-villain Bane in the last Batman movie.
Close sources say that Elton will re-record many of his greatest hits for the film. Top production company Focus Features, which is making the film, said that Tom is the perfect choice to play Elton John.
CEO Peter Schlessel said: “Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material.
“We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton.”
Hardy rose to fame in the UK starring as a brutal British criminal in the prison drama Bronson before making a big name for himself here in Hollywood, starring in smash hits including The Dark Knight Rises and Inception.
The 36-year-old English star is also playing Mad Max in a reboot of the apocalyptic film series, the first being Mad Max: Fury Road.
