One of the last projects one would expect to make noise at this year’s AFM is a film by British artist Amanda Eliasch, who took a suite at the event to promote her art-house-style, semi-autobiographical effort – The Gun the Cake and the Butterfly.
Top Gun it’s not… In fact, this film is more like the real life adventures of Amanda, whose world is a bit like Alice in Wonderland’s. Like Alice, Amanda is a colourful character who has met many, many strange people on her journey…
From beginning to end the ‘The Gun the Cake and the Butterfly’ is a portrayal of Amanda’s real life that almost seems like fantasy. But in fact it is very, very real and in some parts, quite shocking.
Amanda told British Weekly: “AFM started off a bit weird, I thought what the hell am I doing here.
“But as the week progressed I realized I was doing something a little different to everybody else. My work is quite refreshing to some industry professionals.”
While most companies had the basic style suite at AFM, Eliasch went all out to get herself noticed by creating a fluffy pink and white mini-palace kitted out with designer furniture for potential distributors to enjoy – and hopefully take on her exceptional film.
She said: “My film isn’t full of explosions and hunky actors running around with guns blowing up the White House. It’s very art-house. I didn’t expect people to get. But they did. I have had a lot of interest!”
Fingers crossed that Amanda’s film gets a Showtime or BBC America slot. Even a Netflix premiere would suffice, I’m sure…
After watching it myself, I can tell you that it definitely deserves to be seen!
