Based on the series of novels by Winston Graham, Hobbit star Aidan Turner stars as Captain Ross Poldark, returning from the American revolutionary war to his gorgeous but windswept Cornish property, facing financial ruin and romantic betrayal. After fighting, and nearly dying, in the American war of independence, Poldark comes back, scarred, to his native Cornwall to find that his father has died, the family estate is in ruins, and his sweetheart is just about to marry his cousin.

But Poldark being Poldark, he soon scents renewed financial opportunities and finds love again in the form of the fiery beauty Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson). A remake of the 1970s series starring Robin Ellis that helped launch Masterpiece Theatre in America, the glorious new Poldark was a runaway hit during its recent airing in the UK. “A beautifully filmed Sunday night romp,” said The Times), and from The Guardian: “You need look no further for your next guilty pleasure.”

Poldark debuts on PBS’s Masterpiece, Sunday, June 21st at 9pm.
