Meet a Member: Liz Stirling

Meet Liz Stirling from Glasgow who moved to LA 9 years ago to pursue the world of TV producing and fixing.

Was there a particular reason you chose LA?

mam-Liz-StirlingAfter years traveling to LA producing and directing for the BBC I realized there was a gap in the market here supporting UK productions; it was always my dream to start Volt MediaFix in LA so when the opportunity came to leave the Beeb in 2006, I pitched a documentary “Paolo Nutini Takes On America” and low and behold, they commissioned it, the rest is history…

What do you miss most from home?

I mostly miss my Mum, the production values of British TV and the BBC iPlayer.

What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? If so, why?

My first experience of LA as a journalist in 1999 left me thinking it wasn’t a real city, not like London or Edinburgh or Liverpool. Later I realized I had to be more open-minded, and that all cities aren’t built the same way. LA is home now and I love it.

What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Glasgow?

The biggest difference living in LA versus living in Glasgow is, in LA being different is embraced, not alienated.

Do you have any hidden gems in LA that you want to share with us?

Forget Runyon Canyon, the Los Liones trail to Parker Mesa in the Santa Monica mountains is breathtaking, just remember to take your phone, so you can capture the view when you get to the top.

A lot of people have misconceptions about LA – did you?

Like most Brits, I thought LA would be full of rude, self-absorbed people but it’s all about who you surround yourself with and it takes time to make true friends. LA life is an adventure that enriches those who embrace it.

What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?

Save as much money as possible, you’re starting all over again, it takes time to get back to level of your career you were at in the UK but if you’re good at what you do, once you get a foot in the door, you’ll fly.

If your life was a TV show what would be the theme tune and why?

If my life was a TV show the theme tune would be The Stone Roses “Love Spreads” because everyone knows I’m a bit of a rock chick and very forgiving…
