Loving California for the little things….

I Love California! And I am pretty sure a lot of you do too…

However, a lot of people seem to take pride in being dismissive or overly critical of our Golden State and LA in particular. And whilst I can on occasion sympathize, the majority of the time my protective and very defensive feathers get ruffled and I find myself politely asking if they’ve heard about the great discount offers Brits in LA have set up with Air New Zealand which will enable to them to escape this dreadful place (almost) on the cheap!

I think the way to feel settled and content here is to start by appreciating the small things. Even if it is just being thankful for that British accent of yours that seems to open extra doors on your current journey.

I find checking in with news and current affairs (and the weather ) back home makes me really grateful when I am having my ‘criticize California’ moment.

This week I want us all to be grateful for Sunday trading hours – whether you utilize them or not, the fact is they are there if you want them. Did you know if you are a retail business in Britain that is over 280sq m that you can only trade for six hours on a Sunday – and you have to take your pick between the eight hour window of 10am – 6pm?

Some shops choose to have ‘browsing hours’ within that shopping window, which is particularly peculiar when you can often purchase from the same store online during those restricted times. A bill was rejected this past week by Tory rebels and squashed completely by the SNP (Scottish National Party) on the issue of larger shops being allowed to open all hours, which seems rather hypocritical considering they are enjoying the success of not having Sunday trading restrictions in Scotland.

So next time you are shopping (or exercising your right not to) at a superstore on Sunday at 7pm feel thankful.

I would love to hear your views on this – perhaps I am missing the point? Feel free to enlighten me via email at britsinla@gmail.com

As always the Southern California winter goes by quickly, so don’t forget to change your clocks this weekend. It’s time to Spring Forward, although back in the UK they don’t change until until the end of the month.

If you want to come along and meet some of the group in person feel free to join us at our Breakfast Club every Tuesday morning at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood, or our bi-monthly Pub Quiz at the Pikey: next one is Tuesday March 15th hosted by Sandro Monetti. Feel free to come solo and if you are slightly hesitant just send us an email and we will make sure to look out for you and make you welcome!

Cheers!

Eileen
