We’re all hoping for something…

Brexit is a reality. Now what happens?

HOPE seems to be the word of the moment – whether it be the football results, a positive outcome for the EU Referendum, the needed changes to gun laws in America or even just the simple wish that the weather cools off. We all have to have a little hope for something to keep us going. Those four are certainly in my top five this week! Of course it is horrid when you have your hopes dashed but it is equally wonderful when you have them fulfilled – I think most of us, especially those of us who have emigrated, are spurred on by the rollercoaster of hope and enjoy the ups and downs it brings.

So many of you mention to me that you want to meet new people in the hope of making new friends and connections – Los Angeles can be a very lonely place unless you make an honest effort to get out and about. When I first moved here I would go to everything, even the opening of an envelope in the hope of meeting new friends. It was a lot trickier back then as we didn’t have proper internet, not even MySpace (!). The LA Weekly newspaper became my social calendar, as I really didn’t know anyone here. My hard work paid off and now I have lots of lovely friends! So if you fall in to that category of not really knowing anyone, you are in luck, as this week we have quite a lot going on! Starting with football gatherings –

A few of us got together earlier in the week for England v Slovenia at the Lost Knight – they kindly put on the Wales v Russia match for lone Welsh supporter Jaci Stephen which turned out to be the match to watch as it ended in a result of 3-0! Visit us on Facebook @BritsinLA to see where we are watching the other matches. Wales is playing again Saturday lunchtime then England will be up on Monday.

If football is not your thing why not come along to our weekly Breakfast Club on Tuesday at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood? Working? Then you can mark your calendar for Pub Quiz at the Pikey – on July 5th it will be hosted by Sandro Monetti.  This is a really fun evening and a great way to meet new people.

If you don’t have a team we will even find you one to join. Either show up at 7.30pm or drop us a line at britsinla@gmail.com. Not all questions are British and no need to be particularly clever, so you have no excuses – everyone is really friendly and welcoming so be brave and come along! Visit us on Facebook.com/britslovela for full details.

If the weather cools off we will be planning a Sunday roast for those of you who aren’t free during the week – and if it doesn’t perhaps we can all go for kale smoothies – after all when in Rome! Talking of the weather (often a top topic for Brits) make sure to keep hydrated and keep an eye on your pets and elderly neighbors in particular.  Another thing to do is to look out for the many homeless people in LA. A bottle of cold water, an ice lolly or even a baseball cap or straw hat could really make a huge difference to those living on the streets. A simple gesture of kindness could be the glimpse of hope that they are waiting for.

If you have any questions or comments you can drop me a line at britsinla@gmail.com we always love to hear from you!

Make sure to come and say hello if you do attend one of our events!

Cheers

Eileen
