Of course, I cannot start off out this week’s newsletter without first mentioning two massive, epic exits this week.
The shocking upset was Brexit (a public vote deciding whether or not Britain should remain in in the EU). We all know the vote swung in the favour of the LEAVE campaign in the final few days. Now this is pure democracy and I believe it’s very fair to let the public vote on the big issues, like who the leader of the country should be, etc… But the day after “What is the EU?” was the most popular phrase searched on Google by Britons, reminding me that, this is also the country that voted to name a navy vessel “Boaty McBoat Face” (later to be named The Richard Attenborough). A country that makes Mr. Blobby and Bob the Builder Christmas number ones. Why? Because we can and we are very well aware that we like to rock the boat (pun intended) and we have a wicked sense of humour.
I guess what baffles me most is why on earth would you allow the British public to vote on something that some are clearly not versed or educated on. Let’s face it, politics can be hard to understand at the best of times.
Live TV of the House of Lords or the House of Commons shows us a bunch of old farts behaving like naughty public school boys (the female of the species for the most part tend to come across more serious and sensible) heckling, calling of names, laughing at each other, they can be disrespectful, sleeping on the job or on their mobile phones (yes we see it all). My point is by no means is politics a walk in the park, especially when it comes to understanding the legalities and what’s at stake. So the fact that Cameron even promised a referendum in the first places is utterly baffling on its own accord. One thing it has been proven is that most of Britain is divided and Scotland, Northern Ireland and London, (places that voted overwhelmingly to stay) aren’t very happy about this decision. Now don’t get me wrong, there seemed to be some pros and cons on both sides of the vote and it was a really difficult decision and one I know I didn’t make or take lightly.
I have to say now we are living in interesting times my Breeps and only time will tell whether it was the right or wrong thing to do. My only hope is that Britain heals swiftly and quickly and whatever the effects will be remain to be seen. But on a good for some note the GBP is at the lowest for 31 years and having just arrived in London, it finally feels like I can afford to have fun in London, spending my USD that is!
Oh, and before I forget, the second major exit this week was England booted out of the Euros, defeated by Iceland (who for the most part have remained totally under the radar) and mirroring Cameron’s move
after BREXIT, the English manager Roy Hodgson followed suit and quit too!!! IMHO this quitting business when your team/ party loses doesn’t set a very good example to our future generations. Should we just NOT try then? Its seems to be the way. No wonder there is so much fear in the world if failure in trying to reach for your dreams is met with such great disappointment.
The quote “imagine what you would attempt If you knew you could never fail” comes to mind.
Before I left, I had a few friends over for some drinks at the house and a fun game called Mafia (Google it) a game that is sweeping adult cocktail parties all over LA. It’s a game of wits, smarts, detective work and death. It truly makes for a fun evening and it’s a great way to ‘icebreak’ between people who are meeting for the first time.
Finally screenwriter and Brits in LA member Lisa Marks was in town this past week, where we were lucky enough to have a read through of her latest script “Jeannie Miller”. Casting director and actress Victoria Hoffman assembled a fantastic ensemble of actors to read the roles which took place at Ridley Scott’s company RSA films. And I bit the bullet this month and joined uber gym Equinox as I’m determined (at age 42) to finally get a summer six pack. So I’ve been hard it at almost everyday prepping for the body I have always imagined. If you are interested in joining they have a great special on right now where they give you $100 for joining and to be transparent they also give me $100 if you join too. So it’s a #winwin. For details email beaujones@equinoxgym.com and tell him Craig Young sent you.
There are so many great things happening this week including Brits Brekkie sponsored by Air New Zealand at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood this Tuesday then later that same evening CNN’s Sandro Monetti (Brexit expert) will be hosting our pub quiz at the Pikey.
Have a great fortnight!
Craig
