Meet Amy Hoff. Originally from Minnesota she also lived in Glasgow for many years, before making the move to LA to pursue writing, directing, and acting.
Tell us about how you made the move to LA:
I have been working on films in Scotland and it seemed like the next logical step if I wanted to pursue a career in the film and television industry. I am here in order to find work as a writer, director and actor, with a particular interest in episodic, one-hour television dramas with paranormal themes.
I grew up on the American road, living out of cars and cheap motels. That was when I started to hear urban legends and became very interested in storytelling, particularly about monsters. I am now an academic, a folklorist specialising in Scottish mythology and American urban legend with a speciality in monster legends.Next year one of my papers will be featured at an academic conference in Svalbaard on the supernatural in television and film. I am also a writer, filmmaker, and gender fluid actor (can play male or female). My most recent work is Caledonia, a show about a monster police station in Glasgow.
What do you miss most from home?
The Scottish sense of humour and good public transit! From Glasgow in particular, I miss my cast and crew; I worked with the same group over the last seven years and they are wonderful people. And Islay, my favorite island. I’ve only been away for a few weeks so I haven’t had much time to miss things yet!
What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? If so why?
It’s very warm! After many years in Glasgow it will take some time to acclimate. People are friendly, the food is good. It’s strange to be back in the United States after so many years abroad!
What do you find the biggest difference between Glasgow and here?
There is a vast enough difference between Glasgow and LA that it’s difficult to think of a short answer!
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
I’m new, I haven’t had the chance to find one yet! I’ll be sure to let you know. I know a few in Scotland.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
I recommend it. The city is lovely, particularly near the water.
