Ruminating on the election

Ignorance was bliss wasn’t it?

But that bubble has been burst and I think pretty much everyone is shocked by the result, not least of all Donald Trump. The world is divided so dramatically at the moment, we all really need to try to find a way to come together and start helping each other. I am tired of seeing people turn against one another, angrily pointing fingers and calling people stupid because they voted against the grain. Just because the USA have elected a president who points at people and announces ‘WRONG’ when he disagrees with them, doesn’t mean we have to emulate him. It is upsetting that his kind of behavior did not hinder his attempt to become president, but again it doesn’t mean we have to suddenly start accepting that from our friends and neighbours. Don’t fall in to the trap of thinking everyone around us must be a racist, misogynist, as Trump didn’t win the popular vote. California should be proud as they voted in Kamala Harris who is the first Indian American US Senator and due to her father being Jamaican she also claims the title of California’s first African American Senator.

One bright spot: Kamala Harris
One bright spot: Kamala Harris

There were quite a few important measures on this year’s ballot other than voting for President and Senator. Pondering the death penalty felt a bit weird, and I was very saddened that California didn’t vote to repeal it and actually voted to speed the process up! Marijuana becoming legal for recreational purposes – seems like a no-brainer to me, so I wasn’t surprised to see that get a majority vote. Can you believe there wasn’t already a law in place to prevent the sale of gun ammunition without a permit? I was quite taken aback to be voting on that and was relieved to see that went through with a large majority. It really is all these small measures that will make a difference to our lives and local areas. So let’s try and get positive about this mess and focus on the things we can change and not fixate on the things we can’t.
