How to spend a weekend in LA

Have you been to the Broad museum downtown LA yet? They currently have an incredible exhibit from Edie and Eli Broad’s personal art collection. It’s a magnificent display of eye-candy and a place to see so many amazing artists’ work under one roof. From Roy Lichtenstein to Basquiat from Keith Haring to Andy Warhol. There is also a great display of Jeff Koons’ works throughout the museum, from his famed Michael Jackson and Bubbles talking piece, to his Shiny Rabbit and larger than life Tulips sculpture. There is also the Kusama infinity room. But this is an additional sign-up once you have entered the museum. So make sure you sign up for your timeslot as soon as you enter or you will miss it. There is a wonderful documentary on Kusama’s life that I caught at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. What a remarkable, crazy life she had. Definitely worth checking out.

Speaking of documentaries, I also saw “Westwood- Punk, Icon, Activist”, which was an absorbing look at the and times of fashion designer and style icon Vivienne Westwood. This is a must for all fashionistas and those who fancy a stroll down memory lane. Plenty of great vintage footage of London in the Seventies and Eighties. It opens at the Nuart in West LA on Friday, June 15 followed by a national rollout.

Heating up

Now the weather is getting somewhat decent and before we Brits complain about how hot it is, it’s a perfect time to go hike and chill by the ocean. In the same day.  I recommend hiking up to the Wisdom Tree, which is located above the Hollywood Reservoir just west of the Hollywood sign (you can find it on Yelp or just by inputting ‘Wisdom Tree’ in your maps app on your phone. It’s one of he highest points in Hollywood and boasts a jaw-dropping 360 degree view of LA. You can see from the Valley all the way to downtown, all the planes from LAX arriving and departing, and on a clear day the mighty Pacific Ocean. If you hike a little further to the left it will bring you out to the top of the Hollywood sign. Which makes for a wonderful Instagram moment.

And if you fancy dipping your toes in the ocean why not take a trip over the canyon to Malibu and inhale the fresh air. Be wary though, the gulls are quite aggressive and if not stealing your food, will most likely take a dump on you. It happened to me. For some this might be considered good luck, but when you are wearing your favorite Prada shirt, it’s just plain bird muck! On the plus side on a recent visit we enjoyed a memorable lunch at The Little Beach House, an adorable private members club overlooking the ocean. If you know a member, bribe them or twist their arm and demand they take you there. An experience one must experience at least once.

However you choose to spend your summer weekends, enjoy it and don’t forget to wear plenty of sunscreen and a hat! Those clouds can be deceiving.

Cheers!
