Dr. Who’s Elizabeth Sladen succumbs to cancer

I was very sad when I heard the news that actress Elisabeth Sladen, best known for playing the character of Sarah Jane Smith on the popular BBC series Doctor Who and the spinoff CBBC series The Sarah Jane Adventures, had passed away at the age of 63 after losing her battle with cancer, leaving behind her husband, actor Brian Miller, and daughter Sadie.

Sladen first appeared as Sarah Jane on Doctor Who in 1973 alongside Jon Pertwee and soon became the most beloved Doctor Who companion to ever appear on the show. Sladen went on to co-star alongside Tom Baker, and her Sarah Jane character was so popular that producer Russell T. Davies gave Sladen her own show called The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2007. Regarding Sladen’s passing, Davies said: “I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful. The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis.” Speaking about the opportunity to play Sarah Jane to the BBC, Sladen has previously said: “I hit a lovely time in the series. I hit the time of Pertwee and Baker, and sometimes you can almost taste when something is really working.” Lis and Sarah Jane will be greatly missed. Goodbye Lis…the Tardis just won’t be the same without you!
